about

Lorena was a slave girl, likely in the Deep South or on the banana plantations of the islands. This song -- tune and lyrics -- were written by Lorena's husband after her death. The two began courting while they were enslaved on the same plantation. Lorena was sold away to another plantation where she would eventually die. Her and her husband never saw each other again after she was sold. We don't know much about Lorena, but we know she liked a jig. We don't play a jig at the top of the song in this take, but it is in good taste to play one to honor the spirit of poor Lorena.
