about

Little Sadie was written in Thomasville, North Carolina - a small town (that was at the time much smaller) in the western piedmont. Little Sadie is known as a murder ballad, a song that typically tells the story of a young lady who is killed in the name of lust. The ballad writing tradition took hold in North Carolina while Irish and German immigrants were settling NC's backcountry. As these folks began to populate the western piedmont and mountainous areas of the Old North State, Irish instrumentation and melody writing combined with traditional German storytelling to create beautiful, and sometimes sinister, ballads.
